oops.
I’m just going to put this out there, from my own point of view. Marnie is possibly the best character on Girls.
Why? Because she works so hard at having it all together, and then when things crumble she does too, but she tries to keep it together. She feels as though it’s compulsory to remain calm, collected and controlled. Her need to be perceived as having everything under control, to look like you have it all together and to look like you are successful and happy all the time is something that I feel a lot of pressure to do. I get it. I get her.
I see a lot of myself in her, especially in her relationships with Charlie and Hannah. It is similar to ones I have had myself.
Her relationship with Hannah, in particular the most recent series, is very similar to the one I had with a girl who I had been friends with for a long time. Hannah is incredibly selfish and everything has to somehow relate back to her, she is melodramatic and an attention seeker in the biggest way. Fair enough, she has some mental issues that she struggles with and has very low self esteem. However she constantly expects Marnie to swoop in and pick up the pieces, to reassure her that her actions are justified and that she is not behaving like a child. Eventually Marnie snaps. She has completely had it with Hannah and moves on. Distancing herself because she can no longer deal with the trainwreck mess that Hannah is. In distancing herself Marnie seems a cold hearted person, she is someone who is purposefully changing to rid herself of the emotional drain that is Hannah. I have been there. I have been the friend who has changed, the friend who has decided that they have had enough of this drama, the friend who was sick of piecing together someone who so desperate for attention and pity.
In all fairness, Marnie doesn’t go about this in the best way. Sleeping with Elijah is possibly one of the worst things she could do to Hannah.
In episode 4 of season 2 we see Hannah at her childish worst. Her most immature and self absorbed. In retaliation for Marnie sleeping with Elijah, Hannah throws a dinner party -confusing being grown up with cooking your friends food- and invites both Marnie and Charlie, making sure that Charlie brings new girl friend Audrey.
Hannah essentially sets up one of the most uncomfortable and horrible situations for Marnie, purely out of spite. She states that Marnie showing up is “psychotic, because it was a courtesy invite.” Bluntly ignoring that Marnie came over with flowers, prepared to try and repair their friendship. The twist of the knife, however, is that Hannah is seen to enjoy the argument between Audrey and Marnie, smirking when Audrey has a go at Marnie and remarking “no, she’s too self involved to commit suicide” at Audrey pointing out how messed up Marnie was when she showed up at Charlie’s door.
Besides that fact that it is indeed Hannah who would be ‘too self involved to commit suicide’, it’s an incredibly cruel thing to say. Her best friend is being attacked by a girl that she don’t even know or like and Hannah resorts to childish remarks and asides, egging on Audrey. That is not what a friend does, and unfortunately that is what a lot of female friendships are like.
It’s a thankless friendship and an exhausting one at that.
Her relationship with Charlie is something that I can seriously relate to with my own boyfriend. In particular this scene where they get back together. It is enormously similar to how we decided to make things work. Without going too much into it, my better half won’t be too keen on having our relationship spread out for all to see, I have behaved like Marnie. I have made the same mistakes that she did, I have had the Booth Jonathan moment. I have been that emotionally screwed up and tired that I can’t see straight anymore.
This season I had a lot of respect and love for Marnie and just hate for Hannah.
rachel is the best.
